Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands, situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. The island was conquered by the Spanish about 500 years ago. The main administrative center of Tenerife is Santa Cruz de Tenerife which is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands.
Tenerife is often called a paradise island and there is a good reason for it. The climate is mild with sunshine throughout the whole year, making the island the perfect all-year-round destination.
Since Tenerife is a volcanic island, a must-visit place is the Teide Tenerife Volcano which is also the highest point in Spain. You can climb 3,719 meters and enjoy the view over the rest of the Canary Islands. The black-sand beaches of Los Cristianos are also a result of the volcanic activity. Other famous tourist resorts are Playa de Las Americas, which tends to attract younger visitors than Los Cristianos, because if its boisterous nightlife, as well as Costa Adeje, known for its wide variety of accommodations for those looking for a bit cheaper holiday.
The Northern City of Puerto de la Cruz keeps the recently regenerated dark-sand beach of Jardin, surrounded by palm trees and hotels, as well as the famous series of pools known as the Lago Martianez. The series of seawater pools are the brainchild of the Canary artist Cesar Manrique, who created his most famous project inspired by the exotic vegetation on the volcanic coast. Nature lovers can enjoy the botanical gardens and the Loro Park which are situated in the suburbs of the city. Thanks to the benign climate of Tenerife the botanical gardens are rich in trees and plants from all over the world. Loro ark represents a tropical garden with the largest collection of parrots in the world and a dolphinarium for the lovers of sea animals.
